King Calgary checks out Richmonds Pub
As I continue my quest to try out every pub, club, bar and restaurant in Calgary this evening I found my way to Richmonds Pub in the SW. Located just west of Mount Royal campus in the Calgary neighborhood of Glamorgan, I have drove past it a couple times but this was the first time we had chance to stop in for food. Here’s how our evening out and experience checking out this restaurant for the first time went.
Pub, Club or Restaurant
We really were not sure when we pulled into the place off Richmond Road, if it was more of a restaurant or a pub. The building looks huge, there’s a ton of parking, and we have observed the patio outside with people on it a couple of times as we drove past. The sign at the entrance boldly displayed the daily specials which gave clear indication that the place served up a wide variety of traditional pub food. (we were disappointed that nobody was on the patio, but it seems that season ended this week).
Largest Pub in SW Calgary
Richmonds Pub is a big place, the biggest pub we have visited in SW Calgary so far. The high ceilings and open floorplan make it seem even larger. They have a ton of seating, including booths around the perimeter, seating at the bar, pub tables and chairs, and a few really long tables that can accommodate large groups. Definitely a great space if you were to be trying to find a Calgary restaurant that could seat an entire team. This particular night the venue was about half full of customers, most watching the NHL hockey or the MLB baseball game which were both displayed across the bar on countless tv panels. There’s definitely not a seat in the house where you don’t have a view of whatever sports they are playing.
Calgary Pub Food
The service at the bar was good. The young lady who took care of us was quick and efficient, was an experienced server and made sure we were attended to. We had food and drinks, both of which she relayed and delivered accurately. We didn’t get too creative with our orders despite the menu having a lot of different options that sounded good. Because the special of the day was Steak, I was easily persuaded to have the Steak special while my partner had the Buffalo chicken sandwich. Not the unhealthiest of meal choices as we are trying to stick to some sort of healthy eating for the rest of the year to the point that we don’t feel like we are suffering on a diet. The menu did have all the traditional deep fried pub food and salads, but I rue the day that I go out to a pub and eat a salad.
Take a Chance at Richmonds Pub
We didn’t realize it but the pub also has a room full of VLT gaming machines right at the entrance. The fact that they are contained in their own room made them pretty much unnoticeable to anyone who wasn’t interested in them and I assume the players appreciate the fact that they aren’t sitting in the middle of the pub too. The popularity of these gaming machines definitely isn’t what it used to be 20 years ago when they were introduced, largely because most people who play them have already donated all their money to the Province or prefer to go to a Calgary Casino, but still there are a few left who are not good at math who must still enjoy them more than playing Candy Crush on their phone.
Calgary Restaurant Review
Overall I have to say that we liked Richmonds Pub. As far as Calgary pubs to watch sports or other televised events, I think it is the best we have visited and likely one we will return to if and when any of the local teams make it to playoffs in their respective sports. The atmosphere was good, the large space was nice, the service was good, and the food and drinks we had were above average for a Calgary pub. We enjoyed that there was a large crowd of locals there and the diverse menu to choose from. A top review for Richmonds, it was a great choice and we highly recommend it if you haven’t been before. Check out the weekly specials and plan your visit accordingly.
