Arkells Play Highest Event in Calgary Concert History
This morning the Arkells treated a small crowd of lucky X92.9 Calgary radio fans and friends were to an intimate acoustic set of live music played against the backdrop of the downtown skyline viewed from the windows of the Calgary Tower. A super show in a one of a kind venue for sure. King Calgary was lucky enough to be in attendance at this Calgary live music event and capture some great photos and videos of the performance and the enthusiastic crowd. Check out these images and links to a couple videos which I poorly edited together into a bit of a montage.
The show included 5 planned songs performed by the trio from Hamilton, Ontario separated by sincere gratitude and conversation from lead singer Max. One of the unique moments was when a local fan who happens to be a skilled East Coast fiddle player had the chance to join the band and accompany them to a song. She did a great job and even burned the strings up with a bit of a solo.
The highlight of the show for myself and most of those in attendance came actually after the preplanned acoustic set of five songs ended and Max and the band were waiting for the Calgary Tower elevator to whisk them back down to the base. While waiting with his guitar still in hand, the crowd cheered him on to improvise and just play something unplanned. Much to the fans delight he complied and they broke into a crowd favorite which had everyone singing along as they played right up until the elevator doors closed. A very cool and unique moment that just shows the good nature and spirit of these guys. Check this short video….
Special thanks to X92.9 for continuously supporting Canadian rock music, putting on unique promotions and events, and taking care of their fans and listeners. I know there are many people who would have loved to have been at this impromptu live music performance too, hopefully if you tune in to the radio station and their social media channels you can get in to the next amazing function. I look forward to trying to score an invite myself….. hint hint X92.9…. seriously, invite me. I need to get out of the house….
Special thanks also to the Calgary Tower for hosting this show. I know it is not their usual type of event and yet it was a great collaboration. Since starting this blog I haven’t yet done a feature on the Tower and why it is such an iconic piece of Calgary history, and that is my own fault. I definitely have to add it to my list and spend some time there capturing the details so I can share it with all of you readers. I realized today that it has been literally YEARS since I had visited this unique Calgary attraction, and that is probably true for so many locals. I will make a point to get back there soon and create some content to share.
Please follow the video links to my Calgary YouTube channel, there is not a ton of content there yet, but I have so many great videos of Calgary live music shows, live theatre and detailed restaurant reviews of the best venues in Calgary which I need to upload one day soon, promise. Do subscribe so you can see all the great Calgary bands and events that I have sitting on my camera roll waiting to get published.
Lots of exciting shows coming up in Calgary this winter and I intend to see as many as possible. Coming up this month I have reviews on 4 more Calgary restaurants, hitting up the VIP party at Cowboys Dance Hall grand reopening next Thursday, the full costume audience participation Rocky Horror Picture Show @ the Plaza later this month, and a spooktacular XXX Halloween Party that might be too naughty to share all the pictures anywhere else but here.
